New department head for Financial Stability
Press release 21 February 2024
Today, Fredrik Bystedt has assumed the role of department head for Financial Stability at the Swedish National Debt Office.
Fredrik Bystedt has been at the Debt Office since May 2023. He began as a senior advisor in the General Staff department and was later appointed acting head of Financial Stability, where he will now serve as the head of the department.
“I am pleased that Fredrik applied for this position after having led the department’s work this autumn in his capacity as acting department head. In that time, he has demonstrated both the expertise and dedication required for the continued development of the bank recovery and resolution area,” says Debt Office Director General Karolina Ekholm.
“Managing banks and other financial institutions in crisis is a crucial assignment for protecting financial stability and the interests of taxpayers and depositors. It is fantastic to have the opportunity to, together with all my skilled colleagues, continue developing the Debt Office’s work in ensuring that we have the best possible crisis preparedness,” says Fredrik Bystedt.
Before coming to the Debt Office, Fredrik Bystedt served as Principal Secretary for the Payments Inquiry 2020–2023 – a government inquiry resulting in the report “The state and the payments”. He has also conducted inquiries into the resolution authority for central counterparties (CCP) and Sweden’s potential participation in the European Banking Union. He has extensive managerial experience from the Ministry of Finance and has also worked at the National Institute of Economic Research and SNS (Center for Business and Policy Studies).
